Moving to Alsip and needing help with heating

When my husband and I moved to Alsip, Illinois, we had no idea what to expect.

We knew it would be a big change from where we started in the southern part of the country. My husband and I had never even seen snow before. We didn’t own an ice scraper, snow shovel or winter boots. Our former house was equipped with air conditioning and no heating system. We worried about excess humidity causing mold and mildew growth. Our new house is outfitted with a furnace and no centralized cooling system. We arrived in Alsip at the end of September, and the weather was already chilly. I immediately turned up the thermostat and started the heating system. With temperatures in the mid forties, my husband and I were constantly shivering. We were not happy when there was a foot of snow on the ground by Halloween and the temperature dropped down to thirty degrees. I kept raising the thermostat setting, trying to keep warm. The utility bill was an unpleasant surprise. I finally called an HVAC contractor in Alsip and asked for a recommendation. He suggested that we install a whole-house humidifier. He said that overly dry air feels colder than properly moisturized air. The humidifier made a huge difference. I was able to lower the thermostat setting and yet the house feels more comfortable. We are sleeping better at night and having fewer complaints with headaches. I’ve even noticed that my hair isn’t as frizzy. I’m not quite sure if my husband and I will ever get accustomed to winters that last for more than half the year. I don’t think I’ll ever enjoy shoveling snow or scraping ice off my windshield, but at least our house now feels warm and cozy.
