Snowmelt system is worth it when living in SD

So the weather in Sioux Falls gets cold.

Everyone knows this.

In the winter the nighttime temperatures get to be around 6 degrees. Yes, a single digit. Can you believe that? You have to really enjoy snow, ice, and cold to be living in South Dakota. My family is a big time hockey family. So the cold doesn’t bother us too bad. We have a pond that freezes that my husband smoothes out so the boys can play. We drive to the different ice rinks and cheer for our closest professional team. Since the winter season is long and doesn’t let up, the priority has always been heating in our house. I do own an air conditioner, but it is just a series of window AC units that I bring down from the attic. For the most part, we all just rely on heating equipment. I went big this most recent year and upgraded our gas furnace to a boiler system. Boilers are ungodly expensive but are beasts of heating equipment. A boiler can heat a commercial facility if it needs to. The reason I wanted a boiler is because they are durable, long-lasting, and can be converted to a snowmelt system. Since we get so much snow, having the ability to melt it was worth the added cost. I had piping hooked to the boiler and put underneath our driveway. During the winter the boiler heats our house and driveway. We never have to shovel now. The cars don’t get ice on the windshield due to sitting on a heating system too.
