When it’s warm, go to Kennedy Water Playground.

When I moved to South Bend, IN; I knew it was a great arena to live.

I moved to an area that was full of things for my youngsters to do, plus where I knew they would be safe.

I had been told that when it’s hot, go to Kennedy Water Playground. It was a water park designed just for youngsters, however the water was only a foot deep plus there were splash pads, however what they didn’t tell me was that Kennedy Water Playground was no longer open. I was looking for the water playground, although I could not find it online. They had directions, but that was it. Then I started studying the reviews. One lady said not to waste your time going to the Kennedy Water Playground because it was closed…permanently. It was supposed to be scorching hot, I had no pool in my backyard, plus the one arena I was told was perfect for youngsters was closed. I had to go in search of something else for them to do. I found a arena in town that rented kayaks plus other river gear. I rented a pedal boat that was sizable enough for my two youngsters plus me; My friend and I had a great time pedaling around the Big Sioux River. They were splashing each other with the water plus laughing. They started out bummed because they had to stay in the home all day because of the heat. I promised to make them a tent in the family room, plus I would turn the temperature control lower so it wouldn’t be too warm. I would have never thought of pedaling around a river would make them so happy. I knew I was enjoying myself, even if I was doing most of the pedaling.

I could not believe all the wild animals I could see. I was a bit put-off by the mounted animals. I thought it was cruel in addition to inhuman, but when I was told they were found dead, or killed. After coming here for a couple of years, I knew I wanted to work here. They had some hired employees, in addition to I was willing to be a guide, if that is all they offered. I have no problem telling people who are new to the part that the Great Plains Zoo & Delbridge Museum of Natural History is a must-see… Maybe someday they’ll realize what a fantastic employee I could be in addition to hire me. I thought it may be because I was almost seventy, but they do have a sign on the wall that says they don’t discriminate.

We appreciate the corn maze at Thistleberry Farm.

Living in South Bend, IN has more than just a nice locale to live.

It has museums, casinos, and other fun locales to go, and one thing I loved was Thistleberry Farm, but every year, starting in mid-October, they had a corn maze! By the time Halloween came around, and they had their spooky hayrides, it got quite cool.

My friend and I had to wear heavy clothing, since all the excitement happened after dark! The corn maze was large, and I often got lost. That wasn’t a exhausting thing when I went with my guy. Of course, my parents realized I was in the corn maze much too long, and found me kissing my guy, which wasn’t fun, he broke up with me shortly after that. I don’t guess I’ll ever forget all the fun I had at Thistleberry Farm, when I got older, I took my kids to Thistleberry Farm for the fall festivities. They appreciate the corn maze, the hayrides, and even the pumpkin patch, however from the time they were little, I would take them to the pumpkin patch to get the pumpkins for the jack-lanterns. I’m hoping that when they have kids, Thistleberry Farm is still here with all they offer for fall fun. I’m sure there will be other things I like to do in South Bend by the time they grow up. I can only hope there will be fall evenings when it is freezing enough to bundle up. Those freezing evenings with hot chocolate and beanie caps will constantly be memories I will cherish, and hope my kids can cherish too.

The days may be mild, but winter nights are cold.

For some reason, many people think it is always hot and humid in Alabama.

Summer can be brutal, but winter is my favorite time of year. The days are in the low to mid fifties, but nights are cold. We get very little snow, but it is often near freezing at night. On those cold nights, we want to head someplace where it is warm. We could always stay home and enjoy the heat of the furnace, but that’s no fun. Birmingham has an excellent escape room experience that offers a few different variations on their escape room experience. The HVAC is perfect, and you can get a lot of laughs for the evening. The clues and puzzles are a challenge when trying your hand at The Fourth Samurai, Blackbeard’s Treasure, or World’s Collide. You can head over to Escape Live Birmingham and check out the Shelby Boys and Peaky Blinders. They even have a speakeasy bar where you can relax in the comfort of their HVAC and enjoy a few drinks with your friends. Winter in Birmingham doesn’t need to be boring. I especially enjoy checking out the karaoke in different areas. I think someday I could pass for a real singer, if I didn’t have such a horrible voice, but no one tells you that unless it’s your friends, but I don’t listen to them. We find plenty of things to do where I can excel, even if it isn’t in my escape artistry or my ability to sing. We end up finding other things that will occupy our cold winter nights in Birmingham, AL.

Fall in Birmingham brings less humidity.

As a teacher, we need to corral their attention and get them to do their work.

Fall, in most areas, means the temperatures are going down and is the signal that winter will be arriving. Fall starts in September in Alabama, just like it does in the rest of the US. The difference is that our temperatures go into the low eighties, and it signals that the humidity will soon be abating. It also means needing to go back to school. I was a teacher, and I dreaded that time of year. We had air conditioning in the schools, but many of my older students weren’t ready to return. Of course, the younger students weren’t ready to return either. There are so many changes going on about the city in the fall, that the kids are still anxious to be out and about and not stuck in a classroom for hours on end. No sooner does school start and the fall events begin. Many of my students work at the local farms and have responsibilities that carry over to the harvest festivals. Right on the heels of the harvest festivals are the winter holidays. No one wants to be in a classroom when Thanksgiving is coming, and Christmas is right behind. As a teacher, we need to corral their attention and get them to do their work. We know the older kids are going to be working on the weekends and some work during the week. We can only hope they have someplace with excellent HVAC to keep them going when trying to do the homework we assign to them. I know they wouldn’t believe me if I told them I understood. I had to go to school when the summer humidity was abating, and the fun jobs of working harvest festivals were beginning.

Como Zoo wasn’t just a zoo.

When I was in Minneapolis, I wanted to pay a visit to Como Zoo.

I was going to be in Minneapolis for about four days with my daughter, for book signings.

I told her if we didn’t get anything else done, I wanted to go to Como Zoo. The day before we left, we went to Como Zoo Conservatory. It was a blustery day, and I was cold going from the hotel to the car. My daughter was shivering and I was wondering if going to Como Zoo was as important as I thought it would be. It was beginning to snow when we arrived but it wasn’t just Como Zoo, but Como Zoo Conservatory. There were some indoor things to see and do, but I wanted to be up close to the animals. We headed back to the hotel where the HVAC thawed my fingers and toes, and ate lunch in one of the hotel’s restaurants. Minneapolis was far from being a quiet city, and I wouldn’t want to go out alone at night, but even in the winter we found things to do. If I get to return to Minneapolis, I hope it is in the summer where I can see the animals in their homes freezing to death, or getting snowed on.

Weisman Art Museum was my wedding destination.

I wanted my wedding to be someplace unique.

When people walked away from my wedding, I wanted them to have had an experience they would always remember.

It wasn’t going to be just another wedding. I read I could book guided tours of the Weisman Art Museum in Minneapolis, MN, for all the guests that are interested. There were hotels near the museum that were all unique and had excellent HVAC. Whether I booked in the dead of winter, or the dog days of summer, my guests would be comfortable. My mom told me to quit dreaming when I told her I wanted to have my wedding at the Weisman Art Museum in Minneapolis. She told me I had to be an adult first, and then I needed someone to ask me to marry him. I balked at this and walked away. I was only dreaming right now, but I had to start with a dream to make it a reality. For years, I dreamed about my wedding, and one day I met my prince charming. He was funny and dorky, but I fell in love with him. We met while in college, and one afternoon I was telling him about my dream wedding. He laughed and told me he grew up in St. Paul. He said the weather could be really bad, but if that’s where I wanted to get married, all I had to do was set the date. His dad worked at the museum and he could probably get us a discount. That was how I was proposed to.

I traveled over 3000 miles to Lowell, MA

I hadn’t been back to Lowell for almost five years. I went to California for college, and that is where I stayed. I’m not saying that I didn’t miss Lowell, because I did. It was the people and the area that I missed. Had I not moved where there was sunshine 90% of the time, and a beach I could go to any time I wanted, I may have returned to Lowell, but I did have sunshine and beaches all year round. When my aunt called to tell me my sister was sick, I knew I had to go back to Lowell. I was close to my sister, but I hadn’t seen her in over a year. She came to visit me when she had vacation, but that was as far as it went. Now, she needed me or my aunt wouldn’t have called. It was warm this time of year, but it wasn’t going to be as warm as where I now lived. I knew our family home had air conditioning, and I wasn’t worried about it being too hot. When I got to the house, I was glad to be getting out of the car. I knocked on the door, and my sister waddled out of the kitchen. She wasn’t sick, but she was pregnant. She gave me a hug and I could tell she was going through something. The thermostat was so low, that even I was shivering. It was ninety degrees out, but this was ridiculous. She shrugged when I mentioned it, and all I could do is laugh.

heating and cooling Lowell MA

We came to Lowell for Winterfest, and never left.

My husband and I had been thinking about moving for his new job.

He was going to be working in Boston, MA.

Since Boston is only thirty-one miles from Lowell, we were checking there and in other areas within that circumference. We were moving in the new year, and thought it would be a good time to look for a new home while the kids were home. We took the entire winter holiday season to look for a new home. We came to Lowell, MA last, because they were advertising a train ride through the forest where you may find the Grinch. There was ice skating and other great things to do.. We thought the kids would enjoy some fun time along with looking for a home. We were all bundled in because of how cold it was outside. After several hours of falling on the ice and eating too much for lunch, we headed back to our hotel early that afternoon. The heat of the room felt good, and although we only saved Lowell for last, we knew it would have been our last no matter what. We contacted a realtor the next morning. We were moving our family to Lowell, MA. Although they say summers can get warm, as long as there is air conditioning, I’ll be quite happy living in Lowell, MA. Our kids had already made friends and were excited to not be leaving. They were looking forward to living in Lowell, MA and talking about all the great things that happened in the summer. They also wanted to go on the Polar Express train ride next winter.
